What if we can't afford to pay for Assisted Living?
There are a limited number of assisted living operators offering lower pricing, or who may even accept Medicaid / COPES as a form of payment for services. (Medicaid / COPES is an entitlement program designed to help older adults with care needs who outlive their savings.)
As the value of real estate in our area increases, the number of such communities is dwindling.
There are some older buildings which offer more favorable pricing than newer buildings; again, because the cost of a new building is expensive.
Also, individuals who require very little care may find assisted living to be quite affordable. Because a person no longer has other expenses such as utilities and grocery costs, assisted living may become an attractive option for such individuals.
Before you negate the idea of seeking assisted living, contact CHOICE to discuss your situation. We can be reached by phone 7 days a week, 365 days a year from 8:30AM to 8:30PM by calling 800-361-0138.
Families with more modest incomes also have housing and care options available in the community.
Some families opt to care for their own aging parents in their own homes. Similar to the child care issue, there comes a point where it makes more sense to families to remain at home and care for elderly parents than it does to make a move to a care community.
Medicaid / COPES is available for care within adult care homes; however, an older adult must likely have moderate to higher care needs to qualify for such financial assistance.
CHOICE helps families understand their options regarding Medicaid / COPES.
